Tuesday evening, Rickmansworth cricket club fought their way to a thrilling last-ball victory over Watford Grammar Old Boys, at the school ground. The 14, 8 ball overs game was in first round in the Watford Observer Cup
Winning his first toss of the season, Marc ‘Curly’ Robinson had put his team into bat on a reasonable track. The new oversees player Paul Plummer fell early on and wickets continue to fall at fairly regular intervals throughout this close fought match. The Rickmansworth innings was held together by Maz Shah who top-scored on the day with 53, hitting his first ball for 4, he hit 8 boundaries in total in a flamboyant innings, before being bowled by S.Moore. The next highest score being only 15 for Ricky! But in a game where wides and no-balls cost 4, consistent scoring helped them to a competitive total of 142. For the Old Boys, the wickets were shared out, Moore and Wallis bowling tidy opening spells, Shaf took 2 and there was some good fielding leading to 2 run outs.
Rickmansworth probably had the slight upper-hand at the half-way stage on a track that kept low at times. But Grammar started well and scored consistently throughout the innings with Grinham, Dyson and Elgey each scoring in the 20’s. Curly took wickets in each of his first two overs, including the important wicket of Grinham and from then on wickets fell regularly. Tony Norton took 4 important wickets through the middle of the innings as well, to undermine the pursuit and they quickly fell behind the run rate. Four tidy overs from Plummer and crucial wickets also for him (1) and Curly (2) kept Rickmansworth with the slight upper hand. But an inexplicable 4 successive poor deliveries from Norton and an expensive over from Curly, gave the Watford Grammar side some hope, though Norton came back to take 3 wickets in his last 10 deliveries including the important wickets of Dyson and Elgey. They were left needing 21 to win off of the last over and looked like falling short when they only scored 11 in the first 7, but were given a chance when Curly’s last delivery was called for one of those expensive wides (somewhat harshly he felt). But they could not score the 6 they would have needed, to win off the last ball.
